Air quality

The Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators (CESI) program provides data and information to track Canada's performance on key environmental sustainability issues. The Air quality indicators track ambient concentrations of fine particulate matter, ground-level ozone, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and volatile organic compounds at the national and regional levels as well as at local monitoring stations. The national and regional indicators are presented with their corresponding Canadian Ambient Air Quality Standard when available. Canadians are exposed to air pollutants on a daily basis, and this exposure can cause adverse health and environmental effects. Information is provided to Canadians in a number of formats including: static and interactive maps, charts and graphs, HTML and CSV data tables and downloadable reports. See the supplementary documentation for the data sources and details on how the data were collected and how the indicator was calculated. Exploratory Video-Sidescan and Echosounder Survey of Welch Cove

Towfish (sidescan and video) and echo sounder surveys were utilized to examine bottom type and macrophyte cover within the area of two coastal marine finfish aquaculture sites, one in New Brunswick (Welch Cove) and one in Nova Scotia (Jordan Bay). Both towfish and echo sounder data could be used independently of one another. However, the towfish data were very useful for ground truthing echo sounder based classifications. All survey data were placed into a GIS which could be used to answer management questions such as the placement of cages at sites, benthic impacts and baseline conditions to determine long term changes. National Broadband Data

The National Broadband Data represents coverage information across Canada for existing broadband service providers with their associated technology types. The coverage information is aggregated and deployed over a grid of hexagons, which cover areas of roughly 25 square km each. Broadband Internet service availability is provided for download/upload speed markers (5/1, 10/2, 25/5 and 50/10 Mbps) where more than 75% of total dwellings covered within the hexagon have access to broadband service offerings meeting these markers. In order to improve the granularity of the broadband data, ISED and the CRTC are providing aggregated and anonymous broadband services data based on the pseudo-household statistical model, hence achieving higher precision in depicting the broadband Internet service availability. This information is available below under the "NBD PHH Speeds" resource. For more information on the pseudo-household statistical model, refer to the [Pseudo-Household Demographic Distribution](https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/b3a1d603-19ca-466c-ae95-b5185e56addf "Pseudo-Household Demographic Distribution") dataset. A representation of broadband services per 250m road segments is now available for download under the “NBD Roads” resource. To generate this dataset, the NBD PHH Speeds information was projected over the nearest road arc from Statistics Canada’s Road Network File, and those roads were spliced in approximately 250m segments. **NEW:** The data has been augmented to include new presentation layers as published on the [National Broadband Map](https://www.ic.gc.ca/app/sitt/bbmap/hm.html?lang=eng "National Broadband Map").

Public Service Commission (PSC) Departmental Results Framework Indicators

Since April 2018, all organizations are required to use a results reporting structure based on the Policy on Results, which consists of a Departmental Results Framework (DRF) and a Program Inventory. The Policy on Results sets out the fundamental requirements for federal departmental accountability for performance information and evaluation, while highlighting the importance of results in management and spending decision making, as well as public reporting. It seeks to improve the achievement of results across government and enhancing understanding of the results the government seeks to achieve, does achieve, and the resources used to so. A Departmental Results Framework describes: - What the department does (i.e Core Responsibility) - What results the department is trying to achieve (i.e Departmental Results) and, - How progress will be assessed (i.e Departmental Indicators) This collection provides the data behind the PSC’s DRF indicators that measure if the PSC is meeting its core responsibility of Public Service Hiring and Non-partisanship. To view the PSC’s full Departmental Results Framework and Program Inventory, please visit the Infographic for the PSC on GC InfoBase.

Sablefish Standardized Trap Survey – Mainland Inlets

Fishing event (e.g., day, time, location, catch effort), and associated biological data from the Standardized Inlet Survey component of the annual Sablefish Research and Assessment Survey on the British Columbia coast. Introduction DFO and the Canadian Sablefish Association undertake a collaborative fishery-independent annual research survey under a joint agreement. The survey employs longline trap gear to obtain catch rate data, gather biological samples, capture oceanographic measurements, and collect tag release and recapture data. Data summaries are provided here for standardized sets conducted at fixed stations within mainland inlets. The design of the sablefish survey has developed over time by incorporating and discontinuing components, including individual experimental studies (not available on OpenData). This Standardized Inlet Survey component differs in methodology from the other two survey components: (1) Offshore stratified random survey (2003 – present; available on OpenData using link below), and (2) Standardized trap survey – offshore indexing and offshore tagging (1990 – 2010; not yet available on OpenData). For the Standardized Inlet Survey, sets are allocated to five specific polygons in each of the following four inlet areas: Portland Inlet, Gil Island, Finlayson Channel, and Dean/Burke Channel. All four inlets were surveyed consistently between 2003 and 2019. No inlets were surveyed in 2020, and a single inlet was surveyed each year since 2021. Survey procedures are standardized and documented in Canadian Technical Reports of Fisheries and Aquatic sciences. Data tables provided for the Standardized Inlet Survey include (i) Effort, (ii) Catch, and (iii) Biological Information. Inlet Effort This table contains information about annual survey trips and fishing events (sets). Trip-level information includes the year the survey took place, a unique trip identifier, the vessel that conducted the survey and the trip start and end dates (the dates the vessel was away from the dock conducting the survey). Set-level information includes the inlet name, date, time, location and depth that fishing took place, soak time, and number of traps deployed. All successful fishing events are included, where successful sets are those that met survey design specifications. Inlet Catch This table contains the catch information from successful fishing events. Catch is identified to species or to the lowest taxonomic level possible. Catch is recorded as fish counts and / or weight. The unique trip identifier and set number are included so that catches can be related to the fishing event information (including capture location) for each set. Inlet Biological Information This table contains the biological data for sampled catches. Data may include any or all of length, weight, sex, maturity and age. Most of the sampled catch is Sablefish; however, some biological information has been collected for other species. Age structures are collected and are archived until required for analyses; therefore, all existing structures have not been aged. Tissue samples (usually a fin clip) may be collected for genetic (DNA) analysis for specific species. Tissue samples may be archived until required for analysis; for more information please see the data contacts. The unique trip identifier and set number are included so that samples can be related to the fishing event and catch information.

Temperature Change in Canada – Seasonal average temperature departures compared with the 1961–1990 reference value, Canada

The Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators (CESI) program provides data and information to track Canada's performance on key environmental sustainability issues. Indicators of Temperature change in Canada show the yearly and seasonal surface air temperature departures for the years 1948 to 2018. As well, they present a spatial distribution of surface air temperature departures for the year 2018. An annual departure (or anomaly) is the difference between the value for a given year and a baseline value. The baseline values used in these indicators are the annual and seasonal temperature averages for the reference period of 1961 to 1990 (often referred to as the 1961–1990 normal). The Temperature change in Canada indicators help show how Canada's surface air temperature has changed since nationwide recording of consistent and comparable climate observations began in 1948. Information is provided to Canadians in a number of formats including: static and interactive maps, charts and graphs, HTML and CSV data tables and downloadable reports. See supplementary documentation for data sources and details on how those data were collected and how the indicators were calculated. Using shoreline characteristics, relative exposure, depth, and freshwater inputs as surrogate measures to identify areas potentially suitable for eelgrass (Zostera marina) in Newfoundland

Seagrasses support multiple key ecosystem functions (e.g., sediment stabilization, carbon storage, nursery habitat) in nearshore environments across all three Canadian coastlines. Eelgrass (Zostera marina) is a seagrass species that has been designated as an Ecologically Significant Species (ESS) and is the most widely distributed and abundant seagrass in Canada. Given the considerable conservation and management interest in eelgrass habitats, large-scale data aggregation efforts have been initiated to generate comprehensive distribution maps of eelgrass coverage in Canadian coastal waters. However, extensive portions of the Newfoundland coastline have not yet been surveyed for the presence of eelgrass. We combine spatial data layers describing shoreline characteristics, relative exposure index (REI), depth, and freshwater inputs to delineate areas potentially suitable for eelgrass growth in Newfoundland. We determined that many nearshore environments could potentially support eelgrass habitats but confirming eelgrass presence will require further validation and ground-truthing. Incorporating distribution models that use environmental covariates to estimate probabilities of occurrence in nearshore areas could help to strengthen these predictions. Mapping eelgrass distributions provides baseline data essential to eelgrass monitoring and implementation of coastal marine conservation, informing emergency response, and is particularly important considering the consequences associated with the potential loss of ecosystem functions in the event of eelgrass decline. Winter conditions in the Saguenay and St. Lawrence – Helicopter survey (raw data)

For several years, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has conducted annual ship-based surveys in the St. Lawrence Estuary and the Gulf of St. Lawrence to assess environmental conditions and support a range of scientific objectives. Because these surveys do not extend into winter, a complementary regional monitoring program has been implemented annually in early March since 1996. This monitoring program is typically carried out using a Canadian Coast Guard helicopter, although in 2016 and 2017 it was conducted aboard an icebreaker. The winter survey measures physical oceanographic conditions to approximately 200 m depth along with nutrient concentrations in the surface layer. Starting in 2023, the survey was expanded to include phytoplankton measurements. Data from this program are integrated with those from the Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program (AZMP) to produce annual reports including physical (CTD) and biological (bottle) assessments and a Zonal Scientific Advisory for the Gulf of St. Lawrence which can be found on the following webpage under the given year : Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program (AZMP) - https://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/science/data-donnees/azmp-pmza/index-eng.html Here, raw data on physical oceanographic conditions, nutrient concentrations and phytoplankton collected during the winter survey are presented. This publication contains three data files: ‘donnees_data_heli_CTD’ which contains links per year to the CTD data, ‘donnees_data_heli_bottle_bouteille’, which contains nutrient data, and ‘donnees_data_heli_phyto’ which contains phytoplankton data. The dataset covers the period of 1996 to present and is updated annually as new data becomes available. Note: this publication contains raw data, please use with caution or contact the data management team (gddaiss-dmsaisb@dfo-mpo.gc.ca) if you have any questions.
